Diversity at Santander

Achieve your ambitions in a culture of respect

Our customers come from a wide range of backgrounds, and so do our people. We aim to reflect and celebrate diversity in our workplace in order to create an inclusive culture that adds real value to our business.

When we talk about diversity, we don’t want to just pay lip service. It's too important. Our journey over the next 5 years is to ensure that everyone here is selected, promoted and considered by their skills to do the job, irrespective of their gender, sexual orientation, race, age, disability, religion & belief. We want to build a culture where everyone counts. We believe that having a diverse range of backgrounds and perspectives makes us stronger and helps us attract and retain talented people and develop them to their full potential.

What does this mean for you? It means nothing should hold you back.

Partnerships and recognition

We're proud to promote equality & inclusion through our partnerships including Business in The Community, Stonewall, Business Disability Forum, Employers Network for Equality & Inclusion and Working Families.

We’ve received external recognition for our approach to supporting diversity, receiving the ‘Positive about Disabled People’ accreditation and ENEI e-quality gold standard.

Women in Finance

In 2016, we signed up to the HM Treasury's Charter on Women in Financial Services with a five-year goal to create gender balance by setting a target of 50% women in senior roles.

Watch this video of Vicky Wallis, HR Director Santander UK speaking about the importance of this commitment.

Mental health

We've signed the Mindful Employers Charter and the Time to Change Pledge. This means that as an employer we want to destigmatise mental health issues in the work place. By signing the charter and pledge we are demonstrating our commitment to positive and enabling attitudes to employees and job applicants with mental health issues.

Supporting Former Armed Forces members

We are dedicated to hiring from the Armed Forces and their families and this year we signed the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant. The Covenant is our promise to ensure those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly, which aligns with our Diversity and Inclusion policy. Signing the Covenant is only a small part of how we support the Armed Forces. We also work closely with the Career Transition Partnership. They support us by providing recruitment services to find quality applicants for apprenticeships, full time and vocational work opportunities.

Employee Led Networks

When joining Santander we have a number of employee led networks that you can join and get involved in:

Women in Business

Launched in 2012, our focus is to encourage a more balanced representation of women at Santander and help our female colleagues feel more empowered to fulfil their true potential.

Embrace

Launched in 2014, Embrace provides a community for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees to come together to share information, personal experience, hold discussions and support one another. We want our people to feel they've got the support they need and to be part of an inclusive culture where you can be exactly who you are.

Ethnicity@Work

Ethnicity@Work celebrates and embraces cultural differences from race, traditions, heritage and customs – we want our people to feel comfortable about who they are and their cultural background.

Enable

Millions of people in the UK have a disability, and many of our colleagues are either directly or indirectly affected by disability. We continue to build a working environment where our people feel accepted and included. Our Enable! network provides employees with a platform to share, learn, discuss and support.

Parents & Carers

The Parents & Carers Network aims to bring together anyone who feels they want to share or learn from the experiences of others in a similar position. This is for fathers, mothers, step-parents, parents through fostering or adoption, and grandparents as well as those who are caring for someone unable to look after themselves for example through age, illness or disability.
