Financial Crime

Dedicate your career to work that really matters

Financial crime is a significant risk that threatens Santander and the UK as a whole. Our Financial Crime team is all about protecting our customers, communities and shareholders from increasingly complex threats. It’s about more than money. Financial crime funds a wide range of criminal activities that put real people at risk every day. And with so much at stake, simply adhering to legal controls and regulations isn’t enough. That’s why we’re developing a world-class environment for crime prevention.

There are opportunities to shape your career at Santander by exploring specialised roles or by learning and developing new skills and experiences

Retail & Business Bank Financial Crime

The Retail & Corporate Banking Advisory teams work with colleagues in the first line of defence to provide advice and guidance, and to ensure Policy, Legal and Regulatory compliance is achieved. The teams are responsible for overseeing the effectiveness of SAN UK’s systems and controls across Retail and Business bank, to gain assurance that they are adequately managing and mitigating financial crime risk. Additionally, the team is responsible for ensuring the business complies with all laws/regulations, policy and industry guidance associated with Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Sanctions, Counter Terrorist Financing (CTF) and Anti-Bribery & Corruption (ABC).

The teams also contribute to, and support the second line of defence oversight responsibilities, including reviewing the annual business risk assessment, reviewing and approving new products and initiatives and challenging the business to ensure there is effective risk management. They are the first point of contact for forward facing areas of the business, ensuring the bank achieves policy and regulatory compliance in respect of financial crime.

Financial Intelligence Unit

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) sits within the Bank’s 2nd Line of Defence and seeks to use Financial Intelligence (internal & external) to identify Exposure and Risk to the Bank, from criminal networks and activity and emerging identified typologies.

The aim of the FIU is to provide a proactive, effective and holistic intelligence capability, to source, identify, develop, evaluate and disseminate intelligence, both tactically and strategically. Tactical intelligence will include the identification and detection of criminal networks and organised crime groups in the customer databases, which pose a risk to the Bank, or specific control measures. Strategically, the FIU will identify, understand and present on emerging financial crime risk and typologies, allowing for effective management prioritisation of activities.

In April 2016 I was appointed as Santander UK’s Financial Crime Director and Money Laundering Reporting Officer. This role falls under the Senior Manager Regime and is approved by the Financial Conduct Authority with specific prescribed responsibilities covering Anti Money Laundering, Sanctions, Terrorist Financing and Anti-Bribery & Corruption. Prior to this I have been responsible for managing a portfolio of complex transformation programmes at Santander UK including Financial Crime. My career has always been within financial services and has covered both commercial and operational roles for both banks and a top 4 consultancy firm. My aspiration in my working life is to create an environment where Financial Crime professionals can make a real contribution towards disrupting organised crime and terrorist activity, pushing the boundaries of intelligence led detection; being motivated to continue developing and applying specialist skills and expertise. We embrace and respect diversity and active collaboration, enabling people and businesses to prosper, whilst also protecting our bank and our communities. There are opportunities to shape your career at Santander with progression through specialised roles or exploring different roles through learning and developing new skills and experiences
