"I actually first worked here on an internship in London as a strategy and performance analyst. The internship saw me monitoring and forecasting performance for the corporate bank – which is more responsibility than I’d imagined! I also organised a pub quiz for charity with a team of interns from different departments, which was really rewarding. After completing my 10-week internship, I was offered a place on the SCCB graduate scheme – and naturally I couldn’t wait to come back!

I’m currently undertaking the first placement of my graduate scheme in London as a Relationship Manager for the corporate bank in the Financial Services and Professionals team. Each day is different, but my duties include managing existing clients and developing new customer relationships. In addition, I attend meetings with my Relationship Director, promote our products and write credit papers. It’s a fast paced and varied role, and I’m looking forward to the rest of my placements.

I have encountered many challenges here, but I’ve learned to overcome them and adapt. I’ve developed valuable communication skills and gained confidence in engaging with team members and senior members of staff. I have a lot of responsibility, and right from the start people have turned to me to handle tasks that have real value. There’s a brilliant culture and here, with supportive colleagues that share my values and behaviours.

“My first exposure to the office life was as an Internal Audit intern with Santander. At first I was very apprehensive, especially as I did not really know what Internal Audit was! I was welcomed and treated like a real member of the team from day one though, and I soon learned my way around.

I think most people expect interns to be given the photocopying and do the tea runs –but the level of work and responsibility I was given far exceeded my expectations. With continuous support and feedback from the team, I was taking part in meetings and doing work that would actually be used in the audits. The trust in my ability and the approachable manner of the team really highlighted Santander as an ideal place to continuously learn and challenge myself.

The inclusive culture and the great working environment here is what drew me back as a Graduate Auditor. My future career at Santander is very exciting, and there are plenty of opportunities to progress and develop, not only within my career, but also as a valued member of a growing business.
