Innovation at Santander

Santander - the future of

We're not just thinking about now. What's important to us is that we're building a bank with the future in mind. That's why we need to be constantly evolving and finding new ways to make banking simple, personal and fair for our 117 million customers worldwide.

Leading the way with new payment technology

We’re always looking for ways to improve our services for our customers – so to make sure our online banking is constantly developing, we’ll be one of the first banks in the UK to use Payoo. The new payment app will allow faster international payments, as well as providing more certainty on transfer values and payment arrival dates.

Teaching the future of banking innovation

It’s important to us to show those who are interested in a career in the industry the importance of innovation in banking. In the summer we invited a group of creative students to spend the day with teams from various technology divisions in Santander, and experience first-hand how our technicians take innovative ideas and bring them to life. What’s more, the group also heard valuable insights from some of our internal experts. Discussions included key areas from IT security, technology for data innovation and the impact Brexit may have on Innovation.

The First 'Digital Day' inspires our people

Digital innovation is at the heart of everything we do, and we believe this gives us a stronger present and a stronger future. In 2016 we hosted our first Digital Day to inspire and empower employees, and help them understand why digital innovation is so important to us. It was an incredible opportunity to meet influencers who were nominated by their senior leaders, and listen to a number of leading speakers on how digital innovations will shape the future of banking.

Proving our commitment to innovation

As part of our commitment to innovation, we've announced a further $100m to invest in financial technology start-ups. This bold step doubles the $100m originally allocated when the fund was launched just two years ago. And further highlights our goal of remaining at the forefront of innovation in the financial services industry.

"A deeper investment in our FinTech fund represents Santander's success in investing in disruptive new technologies that will help our transformation towards being the best bank for our customers – in the simple, personal and fair way they expect and deserve today."
Ana Botin
Group Executive Chairman of Banco Santander

UK CEO driving change

We’re dedicated to promoting digital innovation not only in our own bank, but also to financial services worldwide. Just one example of our worldwide influence in the industry is our CEO, Nathan Bostock, who has taken to the international stage to drive change and preach innovation at The Financial Services Trade & Investment Board (FSTIB).

The FSTIB was created in 2013, and brings the UK Government and industry together to identify opportunities for growth across the Financial Services industry. Nathan has been championing the work being done with FinTech companies and pointing out the vital opportunity that exists for the UK to help develop and shape a more coherent regulatory framework for FinTechs at an international level.
