Graduate programmes

Well done you. The degree is finally in the bag. Now’s the time to go out there and show the world what you can do.

Happily, we can help with that. With over 15 million customers here in the UK alone, there’s no bigger stage than Santander. What’s more, we have a wide range of schemes to choose from.

Each comes with great training, professional qualifications and a minimum starting salary of £30k.

No more lectures.
Just expert guidance.

What’s it all about?

Find out below, from requirements and eligibility, to benefits and the different schemes that we offer.

What’s involved and eligibility?

Every graduate scheme is different. Some last 18 months, others take over two years. Some might see you rotating across different parts of a business area; others might see you posted in different parts of the country.

But one thing is certain. You’ll work with respected professionals on projects that matter – both us and the millions of customers who rely on us.

Exact requirements will vary between schemes, but as a general rule we look for:

  • 2:1 degree (actual or predicted)
  • Passion for leadership and a collaborative approach to work
  • Strong numeracy and communication skills
  • Confidence to speak up with great ideas and embrace change

What can I expect?

Depending on which scheme you join, you might be coding a new app. Assessing our risks. Or even transforming how we work as a business. The possibilities are almost limitless.

However, every graduate scheme offers you:

  • Exposure to critical business projects
  • Rotations to broaden your experience
  • Support for a professional qualification
  • Chance to take part in a charity project
  • The opportunity to build a career here as a trusted expert
  • Confidence to speak up with great ideas and embrace change

What’s the training like?

The world has changed dramatically over the last 10 years, which has made a real impact on the skills needed by businesses to keep pace with changing technology and customer expectations. This programme is designed to support you, and Santander, in getting ready for a digital future.

It offers a mix of on the job and professional training. Depending on the programme you’re going for, this might take the form of online modules, classroom sessions or a combination of both. You’ll also benefit from rotational placements that will give you exposure, and help you build networks across the business.

This training will provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate to the bank that your fresh perspective and new ideas can be turned into revenue generating, or cost saving, implementations. You can then look back and reflect on your learning throughout the programme.

You will also have access to MIO, our amazing online learning platform, providing you easy access to learning when and wherever you want it.

At every step, you will have a dedicated graduate and line manager for each rotation, supporting you throughout your programme.

What’s the Accelerating Capability Programme?

When it comes to setting your potential free, we haven’t left anything to chance, hence the inclusion of our dedicated development programme Accelerating Capability. This forms part of your graduate programme helping you be as good as you can be. How good? Well that’s up to you.

There are several different elements to this which include:

Innovation Project – An opportunity to demonstrate how your fresh approach to real business problems can deliver a refreshing solution. With an opportunity to present and impress senior stakeholders, you could see your project being implemented across the business. This’ll be your focus in the first year.

Agile Mentoring – You’ll be provided with the skills and tools to allow you to confidently conduct an effective mentoring relationship, bringing your leadership skills to the forefront. This’ll form part of your second year.

GradTalks – We believe that if people are inspired to learn, then they will. This is the inspiration behind GradTalks, giving you the opportunity to discuss hot topics which will be recorded and shared with your colleagues providing exciting insights.

What about networking?

Let’s face it, a solid network of peers will be key to your success on the scheme. That’s why we’ve put together The Graduate Networking Committee. Part of the Accelerating Capability Programme, their sole purpose is to arrange a variety of networking and community events for all our graduates. So, no matter where you’re located, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to share, network and have fun with those who are on the same journey as you are.

What benefits will I get?

It will vary between schemes, but as a general rule you will receive:

  • Minimum £30,000 starting salary
  • 27 days’ paid holiday, with option to sell or buy more
  • Company pension and life cover
  • Sharesave and partnership shares
  • Discounts on brands like Boots, Vue and John Lewis, plus many more
