We recently embarked on an exciting journey to further embed our purpose to help people and business prosper in every business decision. Our Sustainability strategy reflects this ambition to be a more responsible bank. Our values should be evident in everything we do, from the everyday decisions we take to our long-term plans and goals.

Our Sustainability strategy sets a framework for action around our material issues, under four main areas.

Creating a thriving workplace

We aim to create a thriving workplace that attracts, retains and rewards the most talented and committed people. Our culture promotes diversity and inclusion, prioritises wellbeing and develops our people's skills.

Sustainable economic growth and financial inclusion

We want to deliver long lasting, sustainable growth and positive socio-economic impact not only through our charitable giving and community programmes, but also to our customers through our business operations.

Inclusive digitalisation

We aim to use technology in a way that creates value for all of our stakeholders and supports financial inclusion. Technology should help simplify our processes, and make services more accessible and convenient. It is our responsibility to ensure best-in-class data security which will help us earn the trust of all our stakeholders.

Upholding the highest ethical standards and fighting financial crime

Ethics and integrity are the foundation of a prosperous business and society. We're determined to uphold the highest ethical standards, promote human rights and responsible corporate culture.

2018 performance highlights include:

Creating a thriving workplace

  • A 20% increase in investment in training, focusing on flexible, digital training providing skills for the future.

Sustainable economic growth and financial inclusion

  • Supported over 7,900 small businesses and start-ups through the Breakthrough programme, including subsidised interns through the Santander Universities scheme, and provided £20.7m of growth capital financing.
  • Piloted a Specialist Support Team with 7,500 branch colleagues to help vulnerable customers and those with complex needs.

Community investment

  • Launched a new partnership with Alzheimer's Society aiming to make Santander digital banking services dementia friendly.
  • Santander volunteers reached almost 72,000 students, up by 87%, with educational workshops on money management, careers and digital safety.

Inclusive digitalisation of services

  • Continued to add features and enhance the security of Santander's mobile banking app, resulting in an iOS rating of 4.8.

Fighting financial crime

  • Launched a new Anti-Financial Crime Training Academy to build a culture of anti-financial crime in the organisation.
