After going through the graduate bootcamp phase I learned that an apprenticeship is any training programme which combines on-the-job learning with study and qualifications. They are intended to help build meaningful skills for long term careers allowing apprentices to apply the theory in a way that is relevant to their job role in a various business area.
Apprenticeships are changing rapidly to meet the rapid growth and boom the technology and digital sectors. While this may have been true in the past, apprenticeships are now available in over 170 different industries especially in the most innovative and exciting business areas including IT, consulting, banking and data services.
This certainly isn’t the case! Apprenticeships have become a viable alternative route into employment because university simply isn’t for everyone. Some school leavers feel ready to enter the working world without a degree and others undertake an apprenticeship after university to boost their value and employability. Still others have already been working for years and are seeking to diversify their skills set. As I’ve learnt in my short time here, with time experience becomes much more valuable than a degree. A degree may open the door to the working world but hands on experience is the lift that helps you to rise to the next level!
In October 2018 the Chief Transformation Office headed by Manroop Khela began recruiting graduates into the Change Hub to undertake an accredited BCS apprenticeship in Business Analysis. Therefore, this is clearly another huge myth! As graduate apprentices we are brought in to train in the skills that not only Santander demands but that the banking industry as whole desires. We are exposed to excellent progression opportunities and we can get hands on experience without sitting on the side lines spending extra years stuck in the classroom!
We’re six months in so far and one thing is for sure… I’m looking forward to all the opportunities this graduate apprenticeship will create for myself and the other graduates within the bank in the near future!
