About Us

Santander UK plc., part of the Santander Group, is a leading financial services provider in the UK. We offer a wide range of personal and commercial financial products and services.

Our success is built on our focus on retail and commercial banking. We‘ve consistently delivered strong financial results, with profits and revenues that are balanced by strict cost-management and responsible lending.  This has enabled us to be one of the most efficient financial service providers in the UK (1). We’re also committed to building our presence in small-and-medium sized enterprises, mid-corporate lending and retail commercial banking services. This growth will help us to provide a more balanced banking business.

Our vision and aims are clear, and we’ll achieve them by earning and keeping the trust of the public and our stakeholders. Recognising the impact our business makes on the community and environment, we aim to make a wholly positive contribution, treating everyone with honesty and fairness.

Of course, our drive and ambition and success are down to one thing: our people, who are passionate about truly listening to our customers to make banking more simple, personal and fair. And change like that doesn’t happen unless we all speak up with new ideas and challenge things that could be better. That’s why we’ve built a culture of respect, where everyone supports each other to keep their promises and go above-and-beyond – every day.

As our business grows and improves, the opportunities for our people will do the same. We are committed to supporting and nurturing our people to help them as they deliver their personal best, in a culture that knows everyone counts. And that’s not gone unnoticed. This year, we’ve been named one of the ‘Top Employers 2017’ and ‘Top 50 Employers for Women’.

Santander history

Santander UK plc

Since our entry into the UK market in November 2004, we’ve transformed the three businesses which we acquired. The integration of separate management structures, systems and brands improved profitability, and allowed us to broaden our range of value-for-money products, which contributed to strong organic growth. As we develop a working culture that turns ideas into actions, and actively rewards innovation, we look to a future where the creativity and integrity of our thinking will cement our strong position in both the UK and global markets.

Key dates for Santander in the UK include:

  • November 2010. Alliance & Leicester was rebranded as Santander.
  • January 2010. Abbey and the branch network of Bradford & Bingley were rebranded as Santander.
  • October 2008. Acquired Alliance & Leicester.
  • September 2008. Acquired Bradford & Bingley's retail branches and savings business.
  • November 2004. Entered the UK market with the acquisition of Abbey National plc.

Santander Group

Founded in Northern Spain in 1857, Santander is a commercial and retail bank with a presence in 10 core markets in Europe and North and South America. We are the largest bank in the euro zone by market capitalisation.

We have around 14,392 branches (more than any other international bank), over 187,000 employees and more than 102 million customers.

The relationship with our customers is long-standing and built on trust and confidence. In difficult times, knowing the people who you borrow from and lend to is a distinct advantage. Our customers are also spread across the world and our strategy is to have critical mass in each of our core markets, enabling us to operate efficiently and offer our customers the best in products and services. We’re as diverse in our products and services as we are geographically – so we’re not exposed to any single market or county.
