My role here as People Development Consultant means that I look after induction for anyone who's joining a Head Office function. It also entails looking after the basic managerial curriculum here that we have to develop our future managers and leaders.
I work at Triton Square which is a fantastic place to work. I remember my first day and the building was just this massive glass empire that appeared from nowhere. It's a real fun place to be. There's plenty of places to go and have informal meetings and one-to-ones which help support your development. And the people here, in whichever department they work in, are really friendly and keen to help.
I've been given lots of opportunities to progress throughout my time here. I've got involved in various different projects, including working with the graduates, as well as working with anybody else that joins, be that one person joining or we've run seminars up to 50 to 70 people. So it's never the same job any single day and I have to say that's one of the things that I thrive on, the challenge. Knowing that I work for a very, very successful bank. Getting to meet very senior people. I've also had the opportunity to go to Madrid which was absolutely fantastic to actually sense the atmosphere and soak-up the Santander spirit that's actually so visible over in Madrid, which we're hoping to encapsulate and bring over here into the UK.
I enjoy working for Santander because it's a real vibrant place to work. There are really strong ethics and values here, and obviously with the banking crisis Santander weren't affected, which shows the true strength of the brand.
There's a huge common goal and desire to achieve business results, and also through our performance management structure we are rewarded for doing the job in the right way as well as doing a fantastic job, and there's a huge drive and determination here to strive to achieve the best.
What makes Santander such a great place to work?
It's working for the best commercial bank in the UK. More than that, I think it's a question of working for an organisation where teamwork is really valued and where meritocracy, which is that we reward people for the contribution that they make to the organisation, is particularly valued. And I think within that we get a true spirit of teamwork, of delivery, of achievement, which I think makes people very happy and fulfilled in the jobs that they do.
In terms of the atmosphere at Triton Square and what it feels like to work here, I think it's a very friendly place, it's a very open place. There's a great amount of energy that you feel around the place. People enjoy coming here, it's in a great city, a great location, and we have great facilities. I think all-in-all it goes to make-up a great working environment, and I think people really enjoy it and it's a sense of enjoyment that would be the overriding feeling I think that people have here.
Great organisations are built on great people. We've got tremendous people within this organisation. If they deliver their best every day, we will achieve our vision of being the best commercial bank in the UK.
I joined seven years ago. I joined into Abbey 'as was' because obviously it was pre-Santander. And I think it's fair to say that my experience through that time has very much evidenced the geographical and functional mobility that we're very proud of as a Group.
My experiences have taken me into Finance, into IT, into Cost Management and Procurement, Structures and Productivity, a programme management role, Corporate Banking, and latterly in HR resourcing. All of these things have given me great experience, great new colleagues, and have taken me both in the UK to different locations and I've also been based in Madrid for a while.
Santander has a very, very strong culture. We're very fast-paced, we're very focused, we know exactly where we're going, we know exactly what we need to do to get there. There's always something new happening and the delivery timescales are always 'yesterday.' This is something that appeals to a very specific group of people, and as soon as somebody walks into this place they know within 30 seconds. They can feel that Santander spirit, they can feel that it works for them. As a result, we all work with great colleagues, we all work with like colleagues in that sense, even if they've got a lot of variety in their own skills etc. Because of that, the teamwork that you see to actually get that delivery done, that execution focus, is second-to-none.
